Fighting Human Trafficking: Thematic Trainings at DSUIA for Future Police Officers

Dnipropetrovsk State University of Internal Affairs conducted a cycle of trainings devoted to combatting human trafficking in Ukraine.

Cadets of the Educational-and-Scientific Institute of Law and Training Specialists for the National Police Units as well as Preventive Activity and Criminal Police Faculties participated in the training. Nataliia Karnaukh, head of the Department of Educational, Social-Humanitarian and Cultural Work of the Personnel Department, was the lecturer.

On 29 July, the speaker underwent the training “Fighting Human Trafficking in Ukraine. National Mechanism of Subjects Counteraction” initiated by civil organizations “La Strada Ukraine” and “Regional Youth Unity” in terms of the project “Peace Building and Overcoming Conflicts in Ukraine – Step Ahead”. Nataliia Karnaukh shared the obtained knowledge with applicants for higher education in extracurricular time having conducted three trainings within a week.

“Every year millions of worldwide suffer from human trafficking. We realized special significance of this problem in course of the full-scale invasion of russia. More than 5.5 mln of Ukrainians left Ukraine in search of safer places of stay. Thus, combatting human trafficking today requires maximum awareness and attention”, Nataliia Karnaukh mentioned during her introductory words.

Training covered the following topics: human trafficking in Ukraine and the world; key reasons and consequences of human trafficking; types of human trafficking; national and international legislation concerning fighting human trafficking; peculiarities of identification victims of human trafficking and groups under the risk. More attention was paid to issues connected with providing assistance to victims of human trafficking. Separate attention was paid to the national mechanism of counteraction of the subjects combatting human trafficking.

In course of the training cadets were actively discussing the issues and expressed their opinion. The teams drew a so called “reasons and consequences tree” schematically reproducing various types of crimes connected with human trafficking. Afterwards, they presented their research to the audience.

Maximum attention was paid to human trafficking prevention. In particular, cadets were informed on the rules of personal security, including during the stay abroad.
