The 16th General Conference “Relevance and value of universities for the future society” is ending today at the University College in Dublin (Ireland). Among the participants are 360 leaders of higher education institutions around the world. Together with them, the rector of the Dnipropetrovsk State University of Internal Affairs, police colonel Andriy Fomenko, discussed the concept and trends of future education.
Within the framework of the conference, the heads of leading universities of Europe and of the world discussed the relevance and value of universities for the society of the future, the role of higher education for the development of countries and the construction of a sustainable and inclusive future.
Thus, during the plenary discussions, university leaders shared their experiences and also offered their own ideas on how higher education institutions can respond to today’s challenges and develop in order to remain relevant and valuable for the society of the future.
Among the issues on which the participants of the large-scale international event focused in more detail are ways to go beyond the academic circle and unlock science, responding to local needs in a globalized world, forming a reliable social contract with civil society, competences and knowledge for unwritten futures. They discussed, in particular, the role of universities in the development of cooperation and the promotion of global citizenship, as well as the future of higher education in an interconnected and global context, etc.
As part of the conference, Rector Andrii Fomenko visited the headquarters of the Irish police – the Garda Síochána – where he had a meeting with inspectors Eamon O’Loughlin and John Flanagan. Specialists presented the structure of the police, the management system and areas of activity, and also talked about the nature of the crimes they are most often faced with. In particular, systematic cooperation with Interpol, Europol, and the SIRENE/SES Bureau was noted.
In particular, the Rector of the DSUIA got acquainted with the system of police training carried out at the Tipperary Police College in Templemore. So, John Flanagan presented the procedure for selecting future police officers, the basic requirements for admission and the specifics of training. Andriy Fomenko spoke about the activities of the Dnipropetrovsk State University of Internal Affairs, including in the context of training cadets. Separately, he focused on how the educational process was organized at the institution during a full-scale war. They also discussed the prospects for further cooperation, identified current areas of cooperation, and also emphasized the need to establish international relations.
In addition, during the 16th General Conference, a new president of the International Association of Universities (IAU) was elected. It was the Australian Andrew J. Dix, the vice-chancellor of Murdoch University, who became the new president. Andrii Fomenko, the head of the DSUIA, held a working meeting with him.
It should be noted that the event is organized by the International Association of Universities and is being held offline for the first time after the international conference in Puebla (Mexico), which took place in 2019 before the pandemic. A conference is planned to be held in Qatar next year.
