English Language Training According to NATO Standards: DSUIA Instructors Studied New Methodologies

NEWS

Faculty members from the Department of Ukrainian Studies and Foreign Languages of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Law and Training Specialists for Units of the National Police participated in a training program.

The training was conducted in collaboration with the Regional English Language Office (RELO) of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine and with the support of the Advisory Mission of the European Union, with funding provided by the United States Embassy in Ukraine.

Educators familiarized themselves with the peculiarities of teaching English according to the standards used in the military and police training in NATO countries.

The necessity to master modern English teaching methods is associated with the current emphasis on developing educational programs for courses such as “English for Professional Purposes” and “English for Emergency Situations.”

Colin Vandergraaf, a research associate from the U.S. Department of State specializing in English language education, was invited to conduct the training and provide materials for using authentic texts in the classroom.

Prior to the training, interviews were conducted with instructors regarding the specifics of teaching English in higher education institutions with a specific focus, and participants underwent testing to assess their English language proficiency and practical usage. Based on the results, an English language course for instructors/trainers lasting two months was selected, which took place from February 11 to March 27, 2024, with the support of the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) program.

The following seminar topics were chosen: “Using Authentic and Real Texts in ESP Class,” “Working with Lexis: Using a Lexical Approach to Expand Vocabulary and Develop Fluent Speaking,” and “Teaching Without Translation.”

As a result of the training, six representatives from the university received certificates from the Regional English Language Office (RELO) of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine confirming their completion of the training program.
