The Dnipro State University of Internal Affairs (DSUIA) continues to train students of the Driving School from among military personnel.
Yuriy, a former soldier, is now a driver with the right to operate a car, as today he received his long-awaited category B driver’s license.
During the conversation, Yuriy shared that before he was injured, he had no need for a driver’s license and had no driving experience. As Yuriy jokingly remarked, “Back then I had my own legs, I could walk, not drive, but now one leg is someone else’s.”
He had to learn driving skills from scratch. Yuriy admits that theory was more challenging, but he handled the practical part much more easily. For training at the DSUIA Driving School, Yuriy chose an automatic transmission, as his car also has an automatic gearbox.
The “Driving Schools for People with Disabilities” project is an initiative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, implemented within the framework of the “Barrier-Free” initiative by Ukraine’s First Lady, Olena Zelenska.
Why has obtaining a driver’s license become so relevant for people with disabilities? Since the full-scale Russian invasion, the number of military personnel who have been injured or suffered various degrees of trauma has been steadily increasing. Consequently, the issue of their employment has also become more pressing. By mastering the profession of a driver in categories B or C1, people with disabilities can significantly expand their opportunities for finding decent work.
The Driving School for People with Disabilities at DSUIA invites you to train on vehicles with manual controls.
