At the Dnipropetrovsk Professional Art and Culture College, winners and finalists of the regional essay contest “Exploring Elements of the World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage” were celebrated.
The contest was held in honor of the 70th anniversary of Ukraine’s membership in UNESCO and in compliance with the requirements of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Approximately 100 participants from 35 educational and cultural institutions in the region took part, with 16 finalists being selected. In their essays, participants described a country where elements of intangible cultural heritage are prevalent, including the name and description of these elements, their status on the UNESCO list, their bearers, and reasons for choosing these elements and what impressed them the most.
The co-organizers of the contest included the Department of Culture and Sports of the Executive Apparatus of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council, Dnipro State University of Internal Affairs (DSUIA), the public organization “WOMEN plus,” the Dnipro Academy of Music, and the Dnipropetrovsk Professional Art and Culture College. Additionally, special nominations were established by the Honorary Consulate of the Austrian Republic in Dnipro and the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Lithuania in Dnipro. The event was opened with welcome speeches by Liliia Hyrenko, Head of the Department of Culture and Sports of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council, Deputy of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council, and Candidate of Sciences in Public Administration, and Larisa Nalivaiko, Assistant to the Rector of DSUIA on Gender Issues, Doctor of Law, Professor, and Honored Lawyer of Ukraine.
“We aim to increase the awareness of higher education students about UNESCO’s activities in the field of cultural heritage and the elements of intangible cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO. The young generation’s awareness of these issues supports and promotes the multinational cultural achievements of the world,” said Liliia Hyrenko.
Winners of the contest included DSUIA students Oryna Kovinenko and Olena Lukyanenko. The essays can be viewed on the regional tourism website tourism.dp.gov.ua and on the websites and social media pages of the contest co-organizers.
