Address from Rector Oleksandr MORGUNOV on the Day of Remembrance for the Fallen Defenders of Ukraine

NEWS

Dear colleagues, faculty members, officers, and cadets of Dnipro State University of Internal Affairs. Today, August 29, we remember and pay tribute to those who gave their lives to defend Ukraine, its statehood, independence, and unity.

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the Ilovaisk tragedy: on August 29, 2014, Ukraine was struck by the terrible news of the treacherous shooting of Ukrainian soldiers as they passed through a sunflower field. The sunflower has since become the traditional symbol of this day of remembrance.

Ten years ago, organized columns of Ukrainian soldiers found themselves in a deadly trap as they attempted to exit through the so-called «green corridor.» However, this corridor turned into a road of death: Russian forces violated the agreements and opened fire, killing Ukrainian soldiers as they marched.

A total of 366 soldiers were killed, 300 were captured, and hundreds went missing.

Let us honor all the fallen defenders of Ukraine, remember their names, their heroism, courage, and deeds. May the memory of the heroes who never lost their fighting spirit or faith in our Victory remain in our hearts.

Glory to Ukraine!

Glory to the Heroes!

Respectfully,

Rector of DSUIA, Police Colonel

Oleksandr MORGUNOV
