A ceremony dedicated to naming the Dnipro MIA Lyceum after Police Lieutenant Colonel Oleksandr Hostishchev took place at the Dnipro State University of Internal Affairs (DSUIA). The event was attended by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Inna Yashchuk; Deputy Head of the National Police of Ukraine, Police General of the Third Rank Oleksandr Fatsevych; DSUIA Rector, Police Colonel Oleksandr Morgunov; university and lyceum administrations; teaching staff; cadets; and colleagues of Oleksandr Hostishchev.
The ceremony began with the Ukrainian National Anthem. Speaking at the event, State Secretary Inna Yashchuk emphasized the importance of commemorating the Hero of Ukraine, Oleksandr Hostishchev, whose name the lyceum now proudly bears. She highlighted that his heroic deeds exemplify resilience, courage, and dedication to Ukraine. She encouraged lyceum students to take pride in studying at an institution named after a hero who dedicated his life to protecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine since 2014.

Colonel Yuriy Merdenov, Deputy Head of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Dnipropetrovsk Region, stressed the importance of honoring fallen heroes, noting that Hostishchev’s sacrifice serves as a guiding example for all patriots of Ukraine. DSUIA Rector Oleksandr Morgunov thanked attendees and encouraged cadets to focus on diligent studies to develop as individuals and uphold the legacy of the hero.
A special highlight of the event was the presentation of lyceum flags by representatives of the “Lut” Assault Brigade and the commemoration of Oleksandr Hostishchev through speeches by his family and comrades: the Hero’s sister, Iryna Shcherbyna, shared memories of her brother, and Police Colonel Oleksandr Kutsepalenko, Deputy Commander of the “Tsunami” Assault Regiment, recounted the hero’s combat path.
The event concluded with a screening of a documentary about Oleksandr Hostishchev, whose name will inspire future generations of lyceum students.
The ceremony ended with a tour of the lyceum grounds and a group photo of the participants. This event was a significant step in preserving the memory of those who gave their lives for Ukraine and fostering patriotism among the youth.
Background Information
Oleksandr Hostishchev, born in Dnipro, earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from DSUIA. In 2014, he was among the first to volunteer for the Dnipro-1 Battalion, commanding its first company. His unit participated in liberating Mariupol from illegal armed groups in June 2014. During the full-scale invasion, Hostishchev led the “Tsunami” consolidated battalion of the National Police, undertaking combat missions in Mykolaiv, Kherson, Odesa, and Donetsk regions.
On March 15, 2024, he was killed in a missile strike while performing his duty. By Presidential Decree dated May 17, 2024, Hostishchev was posthumously awarded the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, II Class. On March 20, 2024, a square in Dnipro was named in his honor on Heroiv Avenue.
