DSUIA and UNDP Ukraine Hold Three-Day Training on Preventing and Countering Domestic Violence, Including Under Martial Law

The event focused on addressing the identification and counteraction of domestic violence by community police officers, Educational Safety Service personnel, and patrol police officers.

The training was organized and conducted by Dnipro State University of Internal Affairs (DSUIA) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine as part of the “EU4Recovery – Empowering Communities in Ukraine” project, funded by the European Union.

The primary goal of the training was to strengthen coordination and interaction among law enforcement representatives, enhance protection for victims of domestic violence, and establish mechanisms to assist victims, particularly under martial law conditions. The target audience included representatives of the National Police from Zaporizhzhia Region.

The trainers were DSUIA representatives: Alina Harkusha, Associate Professor of the Department of Criminal Procedure, Candidate of Legal Sciences, Associate Professor, Police Major, and specialist in combating domestic violence, and Mykola Repan, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Administrative Law and Procedure, also a specialist in combating domestic violence.

The training emphasized national legislation on preventing gender-based and domestic violence, key principles and tools for assisting victims, particularly under martial law, restrictive measures in countering domestic violence, developing algorithms for coordinated actions to improve police-prosecution-court interactions in cases of domestic violence, types of state programs for offenders, and organizing correctional work with perpetrators.

Participants also worked through theoretical case studies at university training grounds and locations.

Experts contributing to the event included Judge Maksym Taus, Deputy Head of the Novokodatskyi District Court in Dnipro, trainer at the National School of Judges of Ukraine, Doctor of Philosophy in Law, and Mykola Drok, lecturer in the general professional training cycle at the “Police Academy” Primary Professional Training Center at DSUIA, Police Captain.

At the conclusion of the training, participants met with DSUIA First Vice-Rector, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor Ihor Mahdalina, and Assistant to the Rector for Gender Issues, Doctor of Legal Sciences, Professor, Honored Lawyer of Ukraine Larysa Nalyvaiko.

Ihor Mahdalina highlighted the importance of the knowledge gained by police officers and invited them to pursue higher education at the university.

Upon completion, all training participants received certificates.
