The event brought together 26 students from eight higher education institutions across Ukraine.
Participants included cadets and students from Dnipro State University of Internal Affairs (DSUIA), the National Academy of Internal Affairs, Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs, Lviv State University of Internal Affairs, Odesa State University of Internal Affairs, Donetsk State University of Internal Affairs, the National Academy of the Security Service of Ukraine, and Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University.
At the opening, DSUIA First Vice-Rector Ihor Magdalina welcomed all attendees. He emphasized the importance of future legal professionals mastering the skills and techniques of conducting procedural interviews, a key tool in ensuring legality and justice during pre-trial investigations.
Over three days, students, cadets, and master’s degree candidates will explore the methodology, principles, and stages of conducting procedural interviews. Their trainers include faculty from the aforementioned institutions, as well as representatives from the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU), prosecutors’ offices, and police.
On the first day, participants learned how procedural interviews differ from other interrogation methods and practiced preparing interview plans and settings. Special attention was given to psychological aspects of communication, including addressing biases and establishing rapport. The day concluded with a reflection on the practical exercises and a Q&A session.
The program is implemented by the JustLearn development hub, supported by the JustGroup organization, in partnership with DSUIA and the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights at the University of Oslo. It is backed by the “Transformational Recovery for People’s Safety in Ukraine” project, funded by the Government of Japan and implemented by UNDP in Ukraine.
