We invite scholars, practitioners in the field of law, and representatives of the public to join an online workshop dedicated to the issues of judicial errors and ways to improve the criminal justice system.
The event will be conducted by Asbjørn Rachlev — Superintendent of the Oslo Police, researcher at the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights, expert in procedural interviewing, and one of the co-authors of the Mendes Principles.
Within the framework of the workshop, the following will be discussed:
● the nature and causes of judicial errors in developed democratic systems;
● the impact of confirmation bias, mistaken identifications, and false confessions on the formation of unjust verdicts;
● systemic factors that cause judicial errors and ways to identify them;
● international practices for preventing judicial errors (Norway, USA, Canada, United Kingdom);
● four steps that the state can take to increase the effectiveness of investigations while respecting human rights.
