The event was held within the framework of the course “Community safety in conditions of martial law”, developed in close cooperation with the Department of Preventive Activity of the National Police of Ukraine and with the support of the Folke Bernadotte Academy (Kingdom of Sweden) for cadets of the RTI of training specialists for preventive activity units of the NPU.
The main speaker of the event became Viktor Gupta, director of the course of the Nordic Centre for Gender in Military Operations of NATO.
At the basis of the lecture lay the understanding of the concept “gender” and its role in modern society. The lecturer drew attention to the significance of the UN Security Council Resolution No. 1325 “Women, peace, security”, which emphasizes the important role of women in prevention and resolution of conflicts, as well as in peace-building processes. Viktor Gupta noted that this resolution became the institutional basis for the integration of women into the security sector and gave examples of implementation of a gender-sensitive approach in the work of the police of Sweden.
Special attention the speaker paid to issues of response to gender-based and domestic violence, ways of resolving conflict situations in the community and features of communication with victims. In addition, he demonstrated examples of correct reporting, necessary for effective planning of preventive measures in this sphere.
The lecture took place in an interactive format: cadets actively took part in the discussion, gave answers to the lecturer’s questions and had the opportunity to ask their own questions, share thoughts and express their vision of the problem.
