Cadets of the 3rd year of the Faculty of Training Specialists for Pre-Trial Investigation Bodies of the NPU of Dnipro State University of Internal Affairs took part in the event.
The elective class was conducted by the Head of the Information and Technical Support Department, polygraph specialist, Candidate of Legal Sciences, Police Lieutenant Colonel Oleksandr Shcherbyna.
During the class, cadets became familiar with historical methods of detecting lies — from ancient Chinese and Indian practices to modern psychophysiological approaches. Particular attention was paid to the phenomenon of lying as a social phenomenon: its functions, forms, and types.
Psychophysiological, verbal, and nonverbal signs of lying were examined in detail, as well as the principle of operation of the polygraph as a complex multichannel system for recording the body’s physiological reactions to corresponding stimuli; the basic principles of the device’s operation were demonstrated.
Significant attention was paid to the use of the polygraph as an effective tool in the activities of security and defense sector units.
Such classes contribute to the formation in future investigators of critical thinking, understanding of the psychological mechanisms of lying, deepening knowledge in criminalistics, and increasing the level of professional competence. They help better recognize manipulations, collect evidence more effectively, and improve the quality of pre-trial investigation.
