Hostyschev of the Ministry of Internal Affairs became familiar with historical methods of detecting lies — from ancient Chinese and Indian practices to modern psychophysiological approaches. Special attention was paid to the phenomenon of lies as a social phenomenon: its functions, forms, and types.

Psychophysiological, verbal, and nonverbal signs of lies were considered in detail, as well as the principle of operation of the polygraph as a complex multi-channel system for recording physiological reactions of the organism to corresponding stimuli, and the basic principles of operation of the device were demonstrated.
