Workshop and an Open English Language Class: DSUIA Traditionally Engages Foreign Representatives

Dnipropetrovsk State University of Internal Affairs held an unusual event – workshop for English language teachers and an open English language class for cadets simultaneously.

DSUIA has its own tradition of engaging practical police officers, in particular, representatives of foreign states, in the educational process. This time the Ukrainian and Foreign Languages Department applied multidisciplinary approach having invited Maximilian Heesing, trainer of the special team of trainers in public order provision (EUAM), who was either a practical police officer of the Federal Republic of Germany, or an English and French languages teacher.

The university guest told cadets about the peculiarities of German police operation, how their peers studied at the Bachelor cycle, how to be accepted in the international missions and made emphasize on the significance of learning English not only in the EU, but anywhere in the world.

“We live in the open world and as police officers deal with absolutely different people. Can you be sure that a person addressing to you knows Ukrainian? At any time, a foreigner may apply for help, and your common language may be only English, for example. Thus, knowing a foreign language nowadays is not a privilege. It is a must”, Mr. Heesing paid cadets’ attention.

At the same time, Maximilian conducted a real workshop for DSUIA English language teachers in methods of teaching foreign languages in a police academy. He disclosed the secrets of motivating applicants for higher education in terms of learning English, shared methodology of explaining grammar rules and studying professional lexics as well as presented methodic materials he used in his professional activity.

The audience responded with a sincere interest and initiated active discussion as regards the peculiarities of German police work as well as efficient methods of learning English.

Upon the completion of the class and workshop, Maximilian Heesing expressed his gratitude for the audience’s interest and active position, while cadets and teachers thanked the guest sincerely for having shared his experience and inspiration in learning English language.
