Police officers have had mine-safety training at DSUIA

A mine safety training within the framework of long-term advanced training for patrol officers took place at Dnipropetrovsk State University of Internal Affairs. Law enforcement officer from Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, Patrol Police Battalion of Kremenchuk city (Poltava region) took part in training.

Within the training mentioned, on August 4th, 2023 Higher education institution held seminars attended by James Vernon, TetraTech’s American company senior inspector on Demining. The theme of the seminars was “Explosive Ordnance: classification and types. Recommendations on measures should be taken in case of explosive ordnance detection. Hazardous explosive risks and counteracting them. Fire-extinguishing means, fire-fighting equipment and inventory, the procedure and rules for their use during a fire”.

James Vernon put emphasis on the relevance of the topic of study and emphasized its importance for the safety of both police officers and civilians. Law enforcement officers studied the rules and approaches to demining, mastered the categories of explosive ordnance, safety rules during inspection, etc.

In recent times police officers are naturally faced with explosive ordnance detection. For example: during their duties at temporary posts, forward areas and in the territories of cities and towns that suffered from aerial assault. According to their words, such training is extremely relevant for them.

“There is a huge number of explosive ordnance in the civil areas, that is true. It was facilitated by the proximity to the front line, the systematic destruction of cities and villages with air bombs and some shells, missiles or UAVs that do not detonate immediately and can be found by the local citizens later. After the catastrophe at the Kakhovskaya HPP, undetonated munitions that were flooded with water are also found”, – said Halyna Poniatova, a student of the training group, the senior inspector-on-duty from the department of the UPP duty service in the Zaporizhzhia region, police captain.

The importance of explanatory work with civil population and servicemen was noted regarding the awareness of danger when dealing with explosive ordnance and keeping ammunition as “souvenirs”.
