Development of skills and competencies in communication with persons with disabilities: a series of classes for DSUIA students

NEWS

The events were organized by the Psychological Support Unit for students of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Law and Innovative Education of the Dnipro State University of Internal Affairs.

Using specific examples, students became familiar with possible communication difficulties, their psychological causes, and ways to prevent them. An important part of the meeting was the deconstruction of stereotypes existing in society regarding people with disabilities.

The Head of the Psychological Support Unit, Serhii Vyshnevskyi, emphasized that this topic covers both students and university staff. Psychologists plan to raise awareness among all categories of personnel, both temporary and permanent, regarding communication with people with disabilities in order to create a safe psychological environment at DSUIA.

A participant in combat operations of the 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade “Kholodnyi Yar,” currently a specialist of the Department of Social and Humanitarian Work of DSUIA, Oleksandr Hryshchuk, also joined the classes. He shared his personal perspective on sensitive issues in communication with persons with disabilities, including veterans of Ukraine and athletes involved in adaptive sports. Oleksandr Hryshchuk emphasized the importance of sincerity, simplicity, and a humane attitude, which serve as universal “bridges of trust” between people.

The moderator of the event, Vladyslav Bidniak, noted that students showed significant interest in the topic and asked questions related to psychological aspects of communication between police officers and persons with disabilities, both in professional activities and in everyday life.

The practical significance of the classes lies in developing in future psychologists and law enforcement officers the skills of constructive, tolerant, and conflict-free communication, creating a culture of respectful interaction, and deepening psychological awareness in the field of communication with people with disabilities. Future psychologists and lawyers gained a better understanding of the relevance and importance of the topic and acquired knowledge about common mistakes in communication with persons with disabilities.
