The second meeting within the educational and awareness-raising training program cycle “Accessible Communication: Basics of Sign Language for Law Enforcement Officers” took place at Dnipro State University of Internal Affairs.

The event was opened by the Assistant to the Rector for Gender Issues, Doctor of Law, Professor, Honored Lawyer of Ukraine, Larysa Nalyvaiko. She welcomed the participants and emphasized the importance of developing barrier-free communication skills among modern law enforcement officers.

The event was organized with the participation of Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council Deputy and Head of the Department of Culture and Sports of the Executive Office of the Regional Council Liliia Hyrenko, Regional Council Deputy and Director of the Municipal Institution “Regional Olympic Training Center” Dina Miftakhutdinova, Chief Specialist of the Youth, Sports and Gender Policy Division of the Department of Culture and Sports of the Executive Office of the Regional Council Tetiana Shaparenko, and teacher of Special School No. 10 Anna Sorokina.

During the practical session, cadets became acquainted with the basic elements of Ukrainian Sign Language and practiced typical communication situations that police officers may encounter while performing their duties. Participants learned phrases necessary for establishing contact, identifying citizens’ needs, checking documents, informing people about potential dangers, and handling other standard interaction scenarios.

The most active participants of the workshop received commemorative T-shirts with Olympic symbols as gifts.

The implementation of such educational initiatives contributes to the integration of barrier-free principles into the professional training of future law enforcement officers, the development of effective communication skills with people who have hearing impairments, the promotion of respect for human dignity, and the provision of equal access to safety and legal protection services for all citizens.
