Combatting Domestic Violence: Another Training Held at DSUIA

At Dnipropetrovsk State University of Internal Affairs (DSUIA), training sessions continue as part of the regional education program on preventing and combating domestic and gender-based violence.

The event was facilitated by Associate Professor of the Department of Criminal Procedure and Strategic Investigations at DSUIA, Candidate of Legal Sciences, and Police Major Alina Harkusha. Representatives of the university were involved in the event: Yevheniya Kovalenko-Marchenkova, Head of the Scientific-Editing Department, Candidate of Economic Sciences, Associate Professor; Tsagik Oganisyan, Senior Researcher at the Research Laboratory for the Study of Legal Status Issues of Internally Displaced Persons and Gender Equality Provision of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Law and Innovative Education, Candidate of Legal Sciences, Associate Professor; and Taisia Pidgorna, Psychologist at the Psychological Support Department.

The aim of the training was to focus on the importance of implementing the program for perpetrators to minimize domestic violence by correcting the perpetrator’s behavior. Issues related to working with perpetrators were discussed. Attention was drawn to the current status of program implementation for perpetrators and its differentiation from probation programs. The event consisted of two parts: theoretical and practical. Successful examples from specific territorial communities were highlighted. For example, the program for perpetrators has been implemented in the Mezhyivska territorial community since 2021 and operates in accordance with current legislation. Inna Kovalyova, a practical psychologist at the Municipal Institution “Center for Social Services” of the Mezhyivska Village Council, shared her personal practical experience and methodologies for working with perpetrators.

During the discussion, the main reasons for the unsatisfactory implementation status and ways to improve the implementation of the program for perpetrators were considered. Special attention was given to the judicial practice of application and referral to the aforementioned program.
