The event on the topic “Light of memory against the darkness of the past: a lesson of history and professional ethics”, dedicated to the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Fascism, was conducted by the Educational and Research Institute of Law and Innovative Education of Dnipro State University of Internal Affairs.

The participants of the event were first-year students of the Educational and Research Institute of Law and Innovative Education of DSUIA. The associate professor of the department of theory of state and law, group curator Olha Chepik-Trehubenko and military veteran Serhii Basinov joined the discussion.

At the beginning of the event, the deputy director of the Educational and Research Institute of Law and Innovative Education Iryna Dmytryshyn addressed those present, emphasizing the importance of preserving historical memory and comprehending the tragic pages of the past.

During the historical-legal block, the students learned about the events of the Second World War, the crimes of the Nazi regime and the lessons of the Nuremberg process. Special attention was paid to the role of law and representatives of legal professions in the observance of human rights, as well as the danger of using legislation as an instrument of discrimination and justification of crimes.

The students reflected on the questions of the correlation of law and morality, the limits of professional responsibility of lawyers, as well as responsibility for the execution of criminal orders.

In addition, the participants formulated the professional-ethical principles of the future lawyer, among which — respect for human life and dignity, the inadmissibility of discrimination, the protection of truth and responsibility for one’s own professional decisions.

The event contributed to the deepening of the historical-legal knowledge of students, the development of critical thinking and the formation of a conscious attitude to the professional responsibility of future lawyers. The honoring of the memory of the victims of fascism became an occasion to remind of the price of human life, the importance of human rights and the necessity of counteraction to any manifestations of totalitarianism and discrimination.
